Vests for Italian Greyhounds: Fleece, Faux Fur, Puffer and UV Options

An Italian Greyhound vest is the layer for days when your Iggy needs warmth on the body but not on the legs: a cool morning around the house, a quick trip to the yard, or an extra layer over a shirt or bodysuit. With no sleeves to thread, a vest goes on fast, and it is lighter to wear indoors than a full fleece bodysuit. We make vests in fleece, faux fur, sherpa, faux curly lamb, puffer fabric and UV sun fabric, plus a reversible harness vest, and this guide explains when each one earns its place.

Key takeaways

  • Vests warm the chest and back while leaving the legs free, which makes them easy on and off.
  • Fleece vests are the everyday house layer; fur, sherpa and curly lamb vests add plush warmth over other layers.
  • For walks, a hooded wrap vest goes over a harness, and our harness vest is a harness itself.
  • UV vests and sleeveless turtlenecks cover the back and chest on sunny days.
  • On truly cold walks, a vest is not enough: switch to full coverage.

When an Italian Greyhound Vest Beats a Full Top

Iggies chill easily. The Italian Greyhound Club of America notes that short hair and little body fat leave the breed unsuited to long exposure to extreme cold (IGCA health guidance), and PetMD says Italian Greyhounds need protection from drafty conditions indoors as well as freezing weather outside (PetMD on cold sensitive breeds). That is a lot of time spent in clothing, so it helps to have a lighter option. A sleeveless dog vest is it.

Reach for a vest when:

  • You want a house layer. The AKC notes that sweaters are generally lighter than jackets, which can make them more comfortable for wearing inside (AKC on dog sweaters). A sleeveless vest is lighter still.
  • Your Iggy dislikes sleeves. Pulling a vest over the head is quicker than guiding four legs into a bodysuit, which matters for wiggly or anxious dogs.
  • You need harness access. Some of our vests are made to go over a harness, and one of them is a harness.
  • You are layering. Several of our fur and sherpa vests are made a bit oversized, or designed specifically to go over a top or bodysuit.
  • It is sunny, not cold. A UV vest covers the back and chest while leaving the legs bare for warm weather.

A vest is the wrong choice for a long walk on a bitter day. The ASPCA recommends that short haired dogs wear a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck that covers from the base of the tail to the belly in cold weather (ASPCA cold weather tips). For those days, see our Italian Greyhound coat comparison and our temperature and layering guide.

Fleece Vests for Dogs: The Everyday Layer

Our custom sleeveless fleece vests are soft turtleneck vests made from plush anti pill fleece. The soft neck is cozy on a long Iggy neck, and the leg openings are finished with soft elastic for a neat fit. They work as a layer when the weather cools down or as an extra house layer. You choose the fabric from our fleece swatch page.

If you need one sooner, our Ready to Wear sleeveless fleece vests come in standard sizes and ship the next business day, and most are in limited supply. For a whippet, the XL fleece vests have a finished size of neck 14 inches, chest 24 inches and length 19 inches. We also make seasonal prints, from Halloween to Christmas, in the same soft necked plush fleece style. For seasonal looks beyond vests, our Italian Greyhound outfit ideas run through the whole year.

Faux Fur Dog Vests, Sherpa and Curly Lamb

Plush vests are where style and warmth meet. Every option below is made to order from your dog's measurements.

Sleeveless fur vests

Our sleeveless faux fur vests are pullover vests made a bit oversized so they fit over other layers, in your choice of the faux furs on our faux fur swatch page. The sleeveless fluffy fur vests follow the same pullover, slightly oversized cut in a stretchy fluffy faux fur.

For something dressier, the ruched faux fur vests have ribbing at the neck, arms and waist, can be ordered with a snooded neck, and come in turquoise, dusty rose, hot pink, red and white. The sleeveless feather fur vest is made from a very soft faux feathered fur with a knit lining for comfort, in a pullover crop or a slouchy neck style, currently in Winter White.

Faux curly lamb and sherpa

The faux curly lamb snap neck vest has custom button snaps at the neck that can be worn snapped or unsnapped. It is a cute layer on its own or a cozy one over a top or bodysuit.

Our sherpa yoga style crop vests use a soft, low pile sherpa that works alone or on top of a shirt or bodysuit; those prints are in limited supply. For a matching set, the sherpa pullover vest and hat has leg openings trimmed with soft elastic and comes with a sherpa hat to match.

Puffer, Hooded and Harness Vests for Walks

Some vests are built for going out the door. The Hooded Lightweight Popcorn Puffer Vest is made from a light fabric with small puffed squares woven in. It is a light cover up on its own or a cute layer over shirts and bodysuits.

For a cold, quick walk, the Quick Wrap Hooded Fleece Vest Coat is made of heavy fleece that is also lined. It goes over your pup's head and closes with Velcro under the chest, and it is designed to go over a harness or layer over a bodysuit. You can order it with or without a leash opening; it is currently made for pups under 20 pounds.

A vest that is also a harness

Our reversible harness vests are made for dogs from 1 1/2 to 19 pounds with chests of 8 to 20 inches. Web handles carry one or two D rings for leash attachment and for a quick pick up in an emergency, and the two sides let you choose two colors or prints. To order, send the chest at its widest point, the neck, and the length from the neck to where you want the harness to end.

The AKC also points out that a leash hole lets a dog wear a sweater over a harness. For more on harness choices for this breed, see our guide to the best harness for Italian Greyhounds.

UV Vests and Sleeveless Turtlenecks for Sunny Days

Vests are not only a winter piece. Our Ready to Wear UV sleeveless turtlenecks, in small, medium and large, are made from UV 50+ fabric with a 4 way stretch that is comfortable for an active dog, and the fabric dries quickly when wet. The Skin Cancer Foundation explains that a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and lets only about 1/50th through (Skin Cancer Foundation on UPF clothing).

Prefer a custom print? The custom UV sleeveless t-shirts and turtlenecks and the UV dinosaur sleeveless turtlenecks are made from 50 UPF fabric in the prints you choose. For indoor wear and light coverage as summer approaches, our cotton knit sleeveless turtleneck vests are a nice weight in the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a vest warm enough for an Italian Greyhound?

Indoors or on a mild day, often yes. A vest warms the chest and back, but it leaves the legs and much of the belly uncovered, so it is not enough for a long walk in real cold. On those days, use a coat or a full coverage bodysuit instead.

Can my Iggy wear a vest with a harness?

Yes. The Quick Wrap Hooded Fleece Vest Coat is designed to go over a harness and can be ordered with a leash opening, and our reversible harness vests have their own D rings. With a simple sleeveless vest, check that the harness straps sit comfortably and nothing rubs at the armholes.

Should a dog vest be snug or loose?

Snug enough to stay in place, never tight. The AKC advises that dog sweaters should let your dog move normally and be neither too big nor too tight, since loose clothing can get caught or tangled. Our faux fur and fluffy fur vests are cut a bit oversized on purpose so they fit over other layers.

Can my Italian Greyhound sleep in a vest?

Only when you are around to keep an eye on them. The AKC recommends not leaving a dog unattended in a sweater and taking it off before crating or leaving the house. For unsupervised warmth, offer a covered bed or a nap sac instead.

Do you make vests for whippets?

Yes. Our Ready to Wear XL fleece vests have a finished size of neck 14 inches, chest 24 inches and length 19 inches, and our custom vests are made to your dog's measurements. For an unusual size, use our custom order quote form.

Choosing and Sizing Your Iggy's Vest

Pick the vest by the job: fleece for the house, fur or sherpa for plush layering, the hooded wrap for quick walks, and UV for the sun. Our standard sizes run from XS (back length under 12.5 inches, under 8 pounds) to L (17 to 18 inches, 16 to 20 pounds), with Whippet sizes at 20 to 22 inches. Always read the size details in each product description and check our size guide, then browse vests that ship the next business day in our Ready to Wear collection.
